Poor work-life balance

Just like any other career, physicians are susceptible to focusing too much time on their job and letting their family life or personal ambitions fall by the wayside. Although this can occur occasionally without much detriment, a consistent pattern of "all work and no play" can significantly weigh down a physician.

By leaving little time for themselves, physicians can quickly become stressed with the rigors of their job, instead of leading a balanced lifestyle. A lack of good work-life balance can also put greater strain on relationships, which will only increase the stress and burnout


This is more a physical symptom than anything, but nonetheless, exhaustion is a classic sign of burnout for physicians.

Similar to a work-life balance, exhaustion can be the result of too many long days and nights at the practice or hospital. Without setting aside time specifically for rest and rejuvenation, physicians are more likely to reach physical exhaustion, which can make it difficult to be at their best each day.

A chaotic practice

While there can be some patients that are stress-inducing for physicians, the environment of the practice can also play a big role in producing stress.

A high-stress environment will not only discourage physicians, but it will also hinder their quality of care to their patients. In order to help avoid physician burnout, keep a positive practice environment. Practices that are run efficiently with happy employees will also result in better patient care.
